NLHN to hold Heart Truth®/La Verdad Acerca del Corazón Day of Celebration for Farmworker Women in South Florida
WHAT: March is Womens month, and the NLHN, a non-profit organization that addresses critical health concerns affecting Latinas and their families, has partnered with Florida based organization, Sembrando Flores, to help increase awareness about heart disease. The Day of Celebration will commemorate and showcase the successes of NLHN’s Heart Truth® educational program that began in 2009.

NLHN’s Heart Truth® program goal was to improve Latinas’ cardiovascular health and quality of life through the prevention and detection of risk factors; and early identification of heart attacks and strokes. NLHN facilitated sessions in Spanish, reaching at least 100 Latinas (Heart Health Ambassadors). These HHAs, in turn, identify at least 1 personal “doable” healthy behavior activity and incorporate this behavior change into their everyday life.

WHO: National Latina Health Network in collaboration with Sembrando Flores and other local community based organizations.

WHERE: Sembrando Flores 29355 S. Dixie Highway Homestead Florida 33030

WHEN: Saturday, March 20, 2010 from 10 :00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M.

WHY: Heart disease is the #1 killer of women. Women of color continue to have higher rates of some risk factors for heart disease and are more likely to die of the disease. To help address this issue in the Latino community, NLHN has partnered with Sembrando Flores

This unique program could not be possible without the support from the following outstanding organizations:

  • Foundation for the National Institutes of Health
  • The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institutes of Health
  • Sembrando Flores
  • Red Cross
  • Salud Al Dia Magazine

For event information or media interview requests, please call Maribel Quiala at 305-729-5050

National Influenza Vaccination Week
National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) is a national observance that was established to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination, as well as foster greater use of flu vaccine after the holiday season into January and beyond. This year's NIVW (originally scheduled for December 6-10, 2009) will be held January 10-16, 2010.

Since the spread of 2009 H1N1 influenza is likely to continue into the new year, NIVW will be an important opportunity to promote uptake of 2009 H1N1 flu vaccination at a time when demand for vaccine usually drops significantly. While influenza is unpredictable, and while we do not know the likelihood of a future wave of H1N1 influenza, we do know that if more people are vaccinated, the disease is less likely to spread in the coming months.

One of the many goals for NIVW is to engage at-risk audiences who are not yet vaccinated, hesitant about vaccination, or unsure about where to get vaccinated. Every year, certain days during NIVW are designated to highlight the importance for certain groups, like health care workers and children, to get vaccinated.

HHS Secretary makes statement on new breast cancer recomendations
HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius issued the following statement today on new breast cancer screening recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force:

"There is no question that the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Recommendations have caused a great deal of confusion and worry among women and their families across this country. I want to address that confusion head on. The U.S. Preventive Task Force is an outside independent panel of doctors and scientists who make recommendations.

They do not set federal policy and they don't determine what services are covered by the federal government.

There has been debate in this country for years about the age at which routine screening mammograms should begin, and how often they should be given. The Task Force has presented some new evidence for consideration but our policies remain unchanged. Indeed, I would be very surprised if any private insurance company changed its mammography coverage decisions as a result of this action.

What is clear is that there is a great need for more evidence, more research and more scientific innovation to help women prevent, detect, and fight breast cancer, the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women.

My message to women is simple. Mammograms have always been an important life-saving tool in the fight against breast cancer and they still are today. Keep doing what you have been doing for years - talk to your doctor about your individual history, ask questions, and make the decision that is right for you."

NLHN joins American Cancer Society Making Strides Walk
National Latina Health Network walks for nuestras madres, hermanas y comadres.

On Saturday, October 19th in Washington, DC, National Latina Health Network (NLHN) will participate in the Making Strides Walk in honor of the thousands of Latinas who have battled breast cancer.

Despite recent increases in screening rates, breast cancer still tends to be diagnosed at a later stage among Latinas, when treatment options are more limited. Uninsured Hispanic/Latina women are two to three times more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage.

We invite you to help us raise awareness about Latina’s battle. Join the NLHN team and walk with us! Registration is free. Help us be a strong voice for Latinas.

The first 25 individuals who register to walk and raise at least $50 get an NLHN polo.

Making Strides is your opportunity to honor breast cancer survivors, educate women about breast cancer prevention and early detection, and raise funds and awareness to help achieve a day when no one will have to hear the words “You have breast cancer.”
