Working to educate communities and close health care gaps

Too many Latinas/os lack access to the health care system and without insurance, adequate preventive medical care, or health education they’re more likely to be exposed to preventable diseases. NLHN’s approach to eliminating health disparities focuses on prevention strategies. Taking action before the onset of illness is vital and could significantly reduce inequities.

The top health issues affecting Latinas/os today are:

• Cardiovascular disease • Maternal and Child Health
• Cancer • Mental Health/Violence
• Diabetes • Substance Abuse/Tobacco Use
• HIV/AIDS

NLHN is dedicated to developing culturally appropriate and value-based health prevention programs that empower Latinas to make informed decisions about the most intimate aspects of their lives and those of their families.

Programs and Initiatives

NLHN programs and special initiatives target health issues such as HIV/AIDS, tobacco use, diabetes and obesity. NLHN incorporates a peer education component in several of these programs.
